There is a growing awareness of the eco-friendly option we have when using and purchasing our washing machines. The use of biological washing powders and 30 degrees centigrade energy efficient washing cycles are common place. This choice of temperature that we choose when beginning a cycle is the most significant issue that we must face when using our washing machines. For example washing at 90 degrees will double the amount of electricity used than if we chose a 40 degree cycle, this is a significant reduction. With the introduction of the energy efficiency labeling system, the consumer has been given real tangible knowledge of the efficiency that his or her washing machine possess. The grade 'A' rating is the most economical and the dreadful 'G' grade the least efficient. All consumer goods over the years develop technologically and the washing machine is no exception. We have traveled a long way from the top loader of yesteryear, the machines of tomorrow now use steam instead of water, resulting in a massive reduction in electricity and water of course. Other developments include machines that can now weigh your clothing, sense the fabric and even gauge how dirty the clothing is! |

Fridges and freezers over the years have had a bad press, and rightly so. After the panic of a huge hole on our ozone layer the technology of our cold friends had to change. The fridges and freezers that now enter our homes no longer use these destructive CFC's and were replaced with new gases called Hydroflurocarbons (HFC's). Sounds great until you realise that these new HFC's are 1400 times more powerful than CO2 as a green house gas. Thankfully greenpeace developed a safer technology that uses neither CFC or HFC gases and now all fridges / freezers sold domestically in the UK use this technology, The energy labeling system applies to fridges and freezers, look out for fridge and freezers with A++ ratings as nearly all fridges and freezers are eligible for an A rating. |
